Join us for the first installment of the Athens Art Book Fair on Saturday, September 7 & Sunday, September 8 in Stoa Kairi, Monastiraki.
Το Athens Art Book Fair είναι ο πρώτος θεσμός στην Ελλάδα που ασχολείται αποκλειστικά με τις εικαστικές εκδόσεις. Προκειται για ανεξάρτητο, artist-run εγχείρημα που στοχεύει στην προώθηση και υποστήριξη της εγχώριας παραγωγής καλλιτεχνικών εντύπων, στη δημιουργία μιας σκηνής γύρω από τις ανεξάρτητες εκδόσεις και στη δημιουργία συνδέσμων με αντίστοιχες εκδοτικές πρακτικές (αναλογικές, ψηφιακές και οτιδήποτε ενδιάμεσο) στο εξωτερικό.
Η διεθνής σκηνή των art book fairs βρίσκετα σε άνθιση, με εκατοντάδες φουάρ ανά τον κόσμο να αποτελούν περιοδικά σημεία συνάντησης, όχι απλά εμπορικής σημασίας, αλλά και καλλιτεχνικής. Τα φουάρ αποτελούν εναλλασσόμενους χώρους συνύπαρξης που επιτρέπουν την καλλιεργεια κοινοτήτων γύρω από το έντυπο σαν εικαστική πρακτική. Αυτές οι κοινότητες ταξιδεύουν για να συναντηθούν σε αληθινό χώρο και χρόνο, και μέσα από αυτή την πρακτική δημιουργούν ένα ευέλικτο δίκτυο που προτείνει ένα οικονομικό μοντέλο πολύ πιο προσβάσιμο από αυτό των μουσείων ή γκαλερί σύγχρονης τέχνης.
Η ομάδα του AABF, θέλει να εντάξει την Αθήνα στη διεθνή αυτή κοινότητα, καλώντας πάνω από 40 εικαστικούς, φανζινάδες, διανομείς, εκδότες, κ.α να συνυπάρξουν, να γνωριστούν και να αναδείξουν το έντυπο σαν εικαστική πρακτική. Παράλληλα, μέσα από μια σειρά παρουσιάσεων, περφόρμανς, εργαστηρίων και ομιλιών, εκκινεί ένα διάλογο γύρω από την πολύπλευρη φύση των πρακτικών αυτών και πλαισιώνει θεωρητικά τα έργα που παρουσιάζονται κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης.

Athens Art Book Fair is the first organization in Greece dedicated to artist publications. An independent, artist-run initiative, the AABF aims to bring together and showcase artist publications produced in Greece as well as to create a link with publishing-based artistic practices (print, online and else) internationally.
Art book fairs today are not only a venue for representing a separate, prior publishing scene, they are also a central forum for constituting and nurturing a community around publishing as artistic practice. A global phenomenon, these communities take the form of agile, adaptable, and wide-ranging networks are culmination points of dispersed activities: periodically recurring meeting places in real time and real space, where people travel to gather together.
AABF aims to introduce Athens as a new meeting point for this international community, calling for publishers, zinesters, magazines, distributors and artists with an ongoing publishing practice to get together and showcase print as an artistic practice. A series of presentations, performances, and lectures will run parallel to the event aiming to contextualize the diverse works presented during the fair.

Athens Art Book Fair was co-founded by Margarita Athanasiou and Michalis Pichler in 2019 and will take place over three separate floors in Stoa Kairi, an iconic Athenian arcade located right next to Monastiraki metro station, in central Athens. Unfortunately, the venue does not have a lift and is not accessible to wheelchair users
