My bookbinding for the
Designer Bookbinders Bookbinding International Competition
I participated in the
Designer Bookbinders Bookbinding International Competition with the book ‘The
Tempest’ of W. Shakespeare,
a 1908
edition by Hodder and Stoughton, illustrated by Edmund Dulac.
The basic idea of this
binding was the creation of double covers:
A leather inner cover, to express
the dreamlike state of the play and its illustration.
And an outer metal cover,
intended to be the strong element of the composition,
a symbol of Prospero’s force,
who is using sorcery to subjugate the fairies of the island where he and his
daughter were wrecked and to control nature’s elements to bring about the
tempest by which he took his revenge on the usurpers of his throne.
This binding of ‘The Tempest’
is part of a collection of works of mine created in recent years, where I have incorporated
metal elements.
Initially, these are as decorative elements and more recently
in larger areas of the book which are used as the covers on their own.
After
extensive experimentation with various bindings components, I researched
methods on how to incorporate a metal cover with the traditional materials, such
as leather, parchment, paper etc.
Inspired by elements such as
the symbols of witchcraft and the shape of a whirl which invokes high sea
waves, I decided to draw on the metal cover concentric circles in between on which
I have etched spells, incantations and magic letters using engravers techniques.
By heating the metal after
the etching process, surface oxidation occurred; this was maintained to a high
degree by avoiding polishing of the metal surface.
The concentric circles were
cut using a hand held fine metal saw and by displacing these circles in
opposite directions a 3D spherical effect was created.
The leather cover was dyed
with leather dyes while
simultaneously applying masking fluid to isolate other areas. The same technique
was used to decorate the endpapers.
The card board covers were carved in order to embed the metal components which were bent towards the inside of the covers.
Once the book was covered with leather, gilding paste was used to highlight the motion of the waves and some other details. Finally, the title of the book was applied on the spine.
Metal strips have been
attached to the spine by fine steel wire rope. These metal strips connected the
outer metal covers with the book. The spine edges were reinforced by using thin metal strips stitched with fine steel wire.
